About this place
Church of Saint John of Nepomuk in Starý Lískovec is a Roman Catholic parish church in the southwestern part of Brno, standing on Elišky Přemyslovny street. Built during the 1920s to serve the rapidly growing population of this district and neighboring Bohunice, its plain, modern form with a slender tower sets it apart from the baroque and Gothic churches that dominate much of Brno's older architecture.
Who built the church in Starý Lískovec, and when?
The initiative to build the church came from the Augustinian monastery in Old Brno (Staré Brno). Preparatory work began in late April 1923, and the foundation stone was blessed on 17 May 1925. Construction was completed within the following year, and the church was solemnly consecrated on 3 October 1926 by the Bishop of Brno, Josef Kupka. The design was created by architect Vladimír Fischer, with Leopold Čupr overseeing the building work. Four years later, on 1 January 1930, an independent parish covering Starý Lískovec and Bohunice was established — until then, both areas had belonged to a different parish structure, and the growing population justified setting up a separate community.
What architectural style does the church represent?
The church was designed in a simple, modern style typical of interwar ecclesiastical architecture in Czechoslovakia, avoiding the ornate, historicizing forms that had dominated church design in earlier centuries. The building takes the form of a single-nave, elongated structure set on a tall masonry plinth, with a slender side tower that remains the most recognizable feature of the church's silhouette as seen from the surrounding streets of Starý Lískovec.
What can visitors see inside the church?
The current liturgical interior dates from 1977, when the altar table (mensa) was moved to the center of the nave in line with post-conciliar liturgical reforms. A large wooden crucifix with a figure of Christ stands by the main altar, flanked by two side altars dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Conception. Seven stained-glass windows depict scenes including the Last Supper and the saints Adalbert, Joseph, Hedwig, and Teresa. The ceiling is decorated with coffered ornamentation and includes a painting of Saint John of Nepomuk, the church's patron. In 1983, an organ with two manuals was installed and remains in use for services and concerts today.
How to get to the church in Starý Lískovec?
The church stands on Elišky Přemyslovny street in the Brno-Starý Lískovec district, a few kilometers southwest of Brno's historic center. The district is well connected to the city center by public transport, making the church an accessible stop for visitors interested in the less touristy but historically notable parts of Brno.
