Church of Saint George

Ořechov, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint George is a Roman Catholic church in Ořechov, a small village in the Brno-venkov District of the South Moravian Region in the Czech Republic. The building is listed as a Czech cultural monument and ranks among the oldest religious structures in the area.

How old is the church?

The earliest written record of the church dates back to 1325, when the village was still known as Tikovice. Historian F. A. Slavík argued the building could be even older, tracing its origins to the 12th or 13th century — which would make it one of the oldest churches in Moravia. At that time, the structure is believed to have formed part of a local fortified stronghold (tvrz): the defensive chapel stood exactly where the church's presbytery is located today.

What happened during the Baroque rebuild?

The church received its current appearance during a major reconstruction between 1720 and 1725, carried out by architect Mořic Grimm, a well-known figure behind numerous Baroque religious buildings across Moravia. Two additional vaulted bays were added to the original stronghold chapel, turning it into a three-bay nave. As part of the same works, the tower — originally positioned above the sacristy — was relocated above the main entrance, exactly where it still stands today.

What will you see inside and outside?

The church is a single-nave building with a straight-ended presbytery and a square tower on the western façade, which is the most recognizable feature from the outside and marks the main entrance. Inside, the ceiling is decorated with Baroque frescoes dating from 1748. Decades of wear and moisture damage eventually took their toll, so between 2005 and 2010 the frescoes underwent a thorough restoration led by academic painter Václav Holoubek, bringing back the original Baroque color scheme.

The overall proportions are worth noticing: a modest single-nave body paired with a fairly prominent tower — a combination typical of village churches that were reshaped in the Baroque period on top of much older defensive foundations.

How do you get there?

Ořechov lies in the Brno-venkov District of the South Moravian Region, close to Brno. The church stands in the middle of the village and is easy to spot thanks to its tower, so no special directions are needed beyond heading toward the village's central square. The stop works well as a short, quiet break during a longer trip around South Moravia, for example on the way to or from Brno.

When is the best time to visit?

The church still functions as an active parish church, with Sunday mass celebrated on Saturdays at 6 p.m. — a practical way to see the interior during a service. It's also worth checking for Noc kostelů (Night of Churches), a recurring event held at many Czech churches, including this one, when the building tends to stay open longer with an extended visitor program.
