Church of Saint George

Věžná, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint George in Věžná, a village in the Pelhřimov District of the Czech Republic, is a small Baroque parish church with an adjoining cemetery enclosed by a partially preserved wall. It serves the local Roman Catholic parish and is listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

How old is the church?

The first written record of the church dates back to 1358, making it one of the older sacred buildings in this part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. In 1384 it was elevated to parish status, but during the Hussite Wars the local parish ceased to exist and the church was placed under the administration of the parish in Chýnov. Parish life at Věžná was only reestablished much later.

The building's present, predominantly Baroque appearance is the result of a thorough reconstruction and renovation carried out in 1733. That work gave the originally medieval church much of the form visitors still see today.

What is inside the church?

The interior's focal point is the main altar. Its painting, created in 1764, is the work of an unknown painter from Tábor. Rather than an entirely original composition, it is a copy of an earlier late Gothic panel painting from the mid-16th century — so the altar combines an 18th-century layer with a reference to a much older pictorial tradition.

Two Rococo side altars, dating from 1759–1760, flank the nave. One depicts Saint Lawrence and Saint Sebastian, the other Saint Wenceslas and Saint Ludmila. This pairing of Czech patron saints with early Christian martyrs was a common choice for rural Baroque churches in the region.

What surrounds the church?

The church stands within a cemetery, part of which is still enclosed by its old wall. This arrangement — a church and its churchyard cemetery bounded by a wall — is typical of rural sacred sites across the Czech countryside and gives a sense of how the local parish community was organized over the centuries.

Věžná itself is a quiet, agricultural village in the Pelhřimov District, away from major tourist routes, so the church mainly draws visitors interested in regional sacred architecture and local history.
