Church of Saint Catherine

Týnec nad Sázavou, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint Catherine stands on a hill at the northeastern edge of Chrást nad Sázavou, a part of the town of Týnec nad Sázavou in the Benešov district of central Bohemia. Ringed by an oval cemetery wall, this modest but historically layered building is easy to spot thanks to its neo-Gothic tower.

What is the history behind the church?

The original Gothic structure dates back to the first half of the 14th century. Over time its interior gained early Baroque furnishings, and in 1684 the building underwent further alterations. The most visible transformation came between 1888 and 1889, when the nave was raised and the current tower was added, giving the church the neo-Gothic silhouette visitors see today. The whole complex — church, cemetery grounds and surrounding wall — has been protected as a state cultural monument since 1965.

What can you see inside and outside?

The church follows a simple, rectangular single-nave plan with a flat ceiling, closed on the east side by a polygonal, five-sided presbytery covered with a cross-ribbed vault resting on decorated brackets. A sacristy with a cylindrical vault adjoins the building on the north side, while a prism-shaped tower occupies the west end. On the southern facade of the nave a Gothic gable has survived — a visible trace of the medieval form that predates both the Baroque additions and the 19th-century rebuilding. The oval wall enclosing the cemetery grounds is another distinctive feature, marking out the boundaries of the historic complex.

What is the church's role today?

The building functions as a subsidiary (filial) church of the Roman Catholic parish of Týnec nad Sázavou rather than a parish church in its own right, though it is served by the same community. It still stands within an active cemetery, which is worth keeping in mind when visiting — this is a living site, not merely a historical relic.

How do you get there?

Chrást nad Sázavou lies in the northwestern part of Týnec nad Sázavou, roughly 30 kilometres southeast of Prague, so the church makes a natural stop while walking or driving through the town. The hill it sits on is visible from the surrounding area, making it easy to find your bearings even without a detailed map.

When is the best time to visit?

Because of its hilltop position next to the cemetery, the site is best seen during daylight hours with good visibility, when both the neo-Gothic tower and the architectural details of the presbytery stand out clearly. It makes a worthwhile stop for anyone exploring the wider Posázaví region alongside other monuments along the Sázava river valley.
