About this place

Church of Saint Catherine, Hartmanice

The Church of Saint Catherine is a Gothic church standing at the meeting point of Hartmanice's two town squares, on the northern slopes of the Šumava mountains. It is considered the oldest church in the entire Šumava region, including its foothills.

When was the church built and how has it changed over the centuries?

The first mention of the parish in Hartmanice dates back to 1332, though the church building itself most likely originates from the 15th century — an earlier origin cannot be entirely ruled out. The single-nave, late Gothic structure was subsequently altered in the 16th century, and Baroque modifications carried out in the 18th century gave it much of its present-day appearance. The church has been listed as a protected cultural monument since 1964.

Where exactly does the church stand and how do you get there?

The church sits directly at the intersection of Hartmanice's two squares, right by road II/190, which connects Hartmanice with Železná Ruda. Its position at the junction of both squares has made it the town's central landmark for centuries, the point around which everyday life in this part of Šumava has revolved.

What happened to the tower and the bells?

The church tower and roof have undergone a thorough repair, and the interior has been reconstructed as well — the only remaining task is repainting and whitewashing the presbytery facade. The bells have a story of their own: three original Hartmanice bells, dating from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, have returned to the tower. Remarkably, they survived up there for generations, and following restoration they were fitted with a new electric drive, so after a period of silence they now ring out over the town again.

To which saint is the church dedicated?

The church is dedicated to Saint Catherine — Catherine of Alexandria — one of the most widely venerated saints of medieval Europe, whose patronage is shared by numerous churches across Bohemia and neighboring lands. In Hartmanice itself, Sunday services are held at 11:30.

Why stop at the church while driving road II/190?

Road II/190, running from Hartmanice to Železná Ruda, is one of the main routes through this part of Šumava, and the church stands right on it, at the junction of the town's two squares. For travelers passing through, the church is an easy, natural landmark — as the region's oldest sacred building, it offers a chance to see Hartmanice's historic center during a short stop without any detour.
