About this place
The Church of the Holy Trinity sits on a hilltop just east of the village of Vysoké Studnice, in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic. This small but historically layered building changed both its denomination and its appearance over the centuries, eventually becoming the Baroque church you can visit today, surrounded by a wall and three chapels.
How did the church begin?
The original structure was built in 1605 as a Protestant prayer house, commissioned by the Grün von Stürzenberg family, who owned the surrounding estate at the time. The Renaissance core of that first building still survives beneath later Baroque additions, even though it's no longer visible from the outside.
Why did the church change hands and faith?
The turning point came with the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. As supporters of the losing side, the Grüns von Stürzenberg lost their entire estate in the aftermath, including the lands around Vysoké Studnice. The property passed to Blanka Polyxena, Countess Collalto, and the church was reconsecrated in 1665. It has served as a Catholic church ever since.
Where does the Baroque look come from?
The church's current Baroque form dates back to a major reconstruction in 1718, carried out on the initiative of Jan Kryštof Říkovský, knight of Dobrčice. That work transformed the older Renaissance chapel into a single-nave building with a polygonal choir and a square tower — a layout typical of Baroque church architecture in the region.
What can you see on site?
The church, together with its adjoining cemetery, the surrounding perimeter wall, and three chapels, forms a coherent historic ensemble protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its hilltop position means the building is visible from a good distance around, and the cemetery grounds have kept their historic layout. It's a spot that combines genuine architectural interest with the quiet atmosphere of a rural sanctuary.
Has the church been restored?
Yes, it has gone through several rounds of conservation work. The largest post-war intervention was a thorough reconstruction in the 1970s. Later, the interior was renovated in 1995, and the exterior facade was refreshed in 1998. Thanks to this work, the church remains in solid condition despite more than four centuries of history.
How do you get to the Church of the Holy Trinity?
The church stands on a hill east of the center of Vysoké Studnice, a small village in the Vysočina Region. The easiest way to reach it is by car, using local roads from nearby towns in the region — and thanks to its elevated position, the building is visible from the surrounding approach roads well before you arrive.
