Church of Czechoslovak Hussite Church in Brno-Tuřany
The Church of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church in Brno-Tuřany, known locally as the Husův sbor, stands in the Tuřany district, within the municipal district of Brno-město in the South Moravian Region. It is a modest church built in the late 1920s for one of Czechoslovakia's youngest religious communities — the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, founded in the wake of religious reform following the collapse of Austria-Hungary.
How did the parish get started?
The Hussite community in Tuřany began holding services in provisional spaces around 1922–1923, shortly after the Czechoslovak Hussite Church constituted itself as a separate denomination. As the congregation grew, so did the need for a permanent building, and in 1924 a fundraising collection began to finance construction.
Who designed the building, and when was it built?
The design was drawn up in 1925 by architect Jaroslav Kincl, himself a native of Tuřany — a detail that carried extra meaning for the local community. Construction began in 1927, with the foundation stone laid on 14 August of that year. The church was completed and formally opened on 1 July 1928, in a ceremony attended by the Bishop of Olomouc.
What does the church look like?
The building is a simple hall-type church topped with a gabled roof. A tower rises above the entrance, and a ground-level arcaded corridor runs along the front of the facade, creating a gentle transition between the street and the interior — a solution typical of the modest, functional sacred architecture of the interwar period.
What is inside?
The centerpiece of the interior is a semicircular altarpiece titled "Light of Truth" ("Světlo pravdy"). It was painted in 1935 by academic painter Rudolf Kundera, who was awarded the prestigious Rome Prize for the work — a scholarship recognizing outstanding Czech artists and funding further study in Italy.
Is the church still in active use?
Yes, the building continues to serve the local Czechoslovak Hussite Church congregation. Since 2025, the Husův sbor has also hosted Orthodox services — a local Orthodox community uses the same space under the dedication of the Protection of the Mother of God, making the building a space shared between two different Christian traditions.
