Who built Château Talabot, and when?

Construction began in 1860, commissioned by Paulin Talabot, a polytechnicien engineer best remembered for founding the PLM railway company (Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée). He hired architect Louis-Jules Bouchot, who gave the building a Louis XIII-style silhouette. The site had previously held a more modest property called "la bastide du Roucas," and Talabot acquired roughly 25 hectares of surrounding land to reshape entirely.

Talabot was a passionate horticulturist, and he turned what had been barren hillside into a sprawling, tree-filled park. The transformation hinged on water supply: the newly built Vauban reservoir made it possible to irrigate soil that had been brought up the hill specifically to support plantings that otherwise couldn't have taken root there.
