Château La Canorgue
About this place
Château La Canorgue is a family-run wine estate in Bonnieux, one of the most picturesque villages of the Luberon, widely regarded as the pioneer of organic viticulture in this part of Provence. The property sits along the road to the Pont Julien, right in the heart of the Luberon Regional Nature Park, between Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, and has stayed in the same family for more than two hundred years.
Why visit Château La Canorgue?
This is not just another stop on a wine-tasting tour — it's an estate where the philosophy of growing grapes matters as much as the wine itself. Back in the 1970s, Jean-Pierre Margan was the first grower in the area to convert his vineyards to organic farming, and later went further still, adopting biodynamic principles inspired by Rudolf Steiner. The estate now holds both organic (AB) and biodynamic (Demeter) certification, and leadership has passed to his daughter Nathalie, who represents the fifth generation of winegrowers in the family.
Château La Canorgue is also known well beyond wine circles: it served as the filming location for "A Good Year" (2006), Ridley Scott's adaptation of Peter Mayle's novel, starring Russell Crowe. The stone farmhouse, the surrounding vines and the Provençal light seen in the film still draw as many movie fans as wine lovers.
What can you actually see there?
The château itself, its cellars and wine-making facilities are private and closed to visitors. What is open to the public is the tasting room (caveau), where you can sample and buy wines under the Côtes du Luberon AOC label. Depending on how busy the estate is, tastings are either self-guided or accompanied by a member of staff who can talk you through the growing methods and the character of each vintage.
The flagship wine is the red Luberon Rouge, a blend of roughly 60% Syrah and 30% Grenache rounded out with old-vine Carignan and Mourvèdre, delivering dark fruit and the herbal notes typical of Provençal garrigue. The estate also produces white and rosé wines under the same label.
When's the best time to go?
The tasting room is open year-round, Monday to Saturday, from 9am to noon and 2pm to 6pm. It's closed on Sundays and on a handful of public and religious holidays (including May 1st, July 14th, August 15th, November 1st and 11th, and December 25th). Late spring and summer are the best times to visit, since a tasting here pairs naturally with exploring Bonnieux itself and the nearby Pont Julien, a Roman bridge just down the road from the estate.
How do you get there?
Château La Canorgue lies on the route du Pont Julien, a short drive from central Bonnieux towards Apt. Coming by car is by far the easiest option, since public transport in this part of the Luberon is limited. Many visitors combine the stop with a wider loop through nearby villages such as Roussillon or Gordes.
