The heart of the building is a massive square keep rising over two storeys in the southeast corner of the complex - the part that has survived in the best condition. It was originally surrounded by an enclosure wall whose exact outline can no longer be traced. From roughly the 15th century onward, additional wings were attached to the keep, gradually forming an interior courtyard - a layout typical of French fortified residences that grew from a single defensive tower into a fuller domestic complex.
