Chapel of Saint Florian

Tetčice, Czechia

About this place

Chapel of Saint Florian in Tetčice

The Chapel of Saint Florian in Tetčice stands at the heart of the village's oldest quarter and has served as its spiritual landmark for generations — Florian is the patron saint of the village itself. The modest baroque chapel was built in 1764 and originally had a shingle roof; the tower seen today was added only in 1886, together with a stone cross placed beside the entrance.

Why does a small village have its own chapel?

Tetčice lies southeast of Rosice, and the first written record of the village dates back to 1240. The chapel dedicated to Saint Florian — patron of firefighters and traditionally invoked against fire and flood — came much later, in the second half of the 18th century, and quickly became the focal point of religious life in the community.

What is inside the chapel's tower?

When the tower was added in 1886, two bells were installed a year later, in 1887, cast in Brno by bell-founder Emil Vebr and commissioned by Jan Odehnal. The larger bell, weighing 75 kg, was dedicated to Saint Florian; the smaller, 45-kg bell was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Both original bells were later requisitioned for wartime use. In 1918 a steel replacement bell, again dedicated to Saint Florian, was cast at Rudolf Manoušek's foundry in Brno — and it is this bell that still hangs in the tower today.

What does the chapel look like now?

The building underwent a thorough restoration in 1999. As part of that work, the painting of Saint Florian inside the chapel was restored by academic painter Renata Bartoňková. Next to the chapel stands a stone cross, funded in 1886 by Maria Šebestová, which together with the tower forms the recognizable silhouette of the village center.

When is the best time to visit?

The most distinctive moment of the year is the village's patronal feast (pouť) honoring Saint Florian. Mass is held outdoors, in the square in front of the chapel, since the small interior cannot hold everyone who attends. It is a good opportunity to see the chapel in active use and experience how alive the local tradition around the village's patron saint still is.
