About this place
Centro de Artes e Criatividade de Torres Vedras is a cultural centre dedicated to Carnival, opened on 25 April 2021 in the Portuguese town of Torres Vedras. It occupies a rehabilitated former municipal slaughterhouse, a good example of an industrial building given a new purpose.
Where is the centre?
The building stands on the Encosta de São Vicente hillside, north of the Sizandro river. The address is Rua Leonel Trindade, 2560-612 Torres Vedras. It lies in a quieter part of town, a little away from the main streets, so it is worth planning your route in advance.
What can you see here?
The heart of the centre is its permanent exhibition, "Carnival: Rites, Arts and Creativity". It shows that Carnival, though celebrated in very different forms, is a common denominator across many cultures. The display presents more than 30 carnivals from 7 regions of the world. A separate strand covers the history, makers and protagonists of the Carnival of Torres Vedras itself, one of the best-known events of its kind in Portugal.
For visitors, it is a chance to discover the tradition of colourful parades, costumes and craftsmanship outside the Carnival season, when the streets of the town return to their everyday rhythm.
What is the mission of the place?
The centre is not only a museum. Its aim is to promote artistic practice and creativity as forms of social inclusion. It seeks to strengthen the sense of belonging among the communities of Encosta de São Vicente and of the wider city of Torres Vedras. This gives it a double role as a tourist attraction and a local community hub.
The building
Converting the former slaughterhouse into a cultural venue is an example of regeneration of a structure that for years served a very different purpose. The building's story is presented on the centre's official website, in the section devoted to the premises.
