About this place

Centro Ciência Viva de Estremoz

Centro Ciência Viva de Estremoz is a hands-on science centre in Estremoz, in Portugal's Alentejo region. It opened on 27 May 2005 in part of the former Convent of the Maltezas and belongs to the national Ciência Viva network. It is also one of the University of Évora's poles. Its central theme is the Earth, the place where we live.

What is a Centro Ciência Viva?

Ciência Viva centres are places where science steps outside the laboratory. Visitors do not just look at exhibits: they touch, experiment and work things out for themselves. The Estremoz centre is devoted almost entirely to geology and the secrets of our planet, which makes it a good stop for anyone curious about how the Earth works.

What can you see here?

Among the best-known attractions are:

  • a four-metre-high volcano that helps explain what happens beneath the planet's surface,
  • a life-size replica of a T-Rex, usually a favourite with younger visitors,
  • a model of the solar system built to the scale of the Estremoz municipality, spread across the town and its surroundings, so the distances between planets can be seen on the ground.

That last idea reaches beyond the building. Following the planets becomes a walk through the area and gives a real sense of how vast cosmic distances are.

A building with a long history

The Convent of the Maltezas dates from the 16th century. Its architecture blends Gothic and Manueline elements, and it was built with regional materials, notably Estremoz marble. A visit is therefore also a chance to see historic interiors where modern science meets older architecture.

Who is it for?

The centre receives around 20,000 visitors a year, roughly 65 percent of them school groups, which shows its educational role in the region. It also works well as a stop for families with children and for adults interested in geology and astronomy.
