Castel of Rochecolombe

What is the history behind the castle?

The stronghold was built in the 12th century by the lords of Ucel, with the earliest written record dating to 1170, when the Counts of Toulouse granted the land to the Ucel family. In the first half of the 13th century, the estate passed to the Vogüé family, who came from a neighboring seigniory and made the castle their principal residence.

The Vogüé family lived at Rochecolombe until the early 17th century, when the turmoil of the Wars of Religion forced them to abandon the castle, which was subsequently burned. From then on the building fell gradually into ruin, though its chapel survived intact. In 1839, Marquis Léonce de Vogüé bought back what remained of his family's former home, but the rest of the structure kept deteriorating — only the Chapel of Saint Barthélemy was preserved and maintained.
