Buky nad Kameničkou

Blatno, Czechia

About this place

Buky nad Kameničkou

Buky nad Kameničkou is a small but ecologically valuable nature reserve tucked into the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory), northwest of the village of Blatno, in the valley of the Kamenička stream, roughly three kilometers from the settlement of Bečov u Blatna. The protected area (registration number 1682) lies in the Chomutov district of the Ústí nad Labem Region and is managed by the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency of the Czech Republic.

What does the reserve protect?

The reserve exists to safeguard a stretch of natural beech-maple forest estimated to be around 200 years old. Stands like this, which have developed largely undisturbed over centuries, are increasingly rare — they preserve a structure close to the original forest, with rich herbaceous undergrowth and natural tree regeneration rather than the more uniform look of managed woodland.

What plants grow here?

The forest floor is typical of fertile beech woodland, featuring purplish prenanthes, variegated Solomon's seal, two-leaved maianthemum and several fern species. This diverse herb layer is itself a sign of a long-stable ecosystem that hasn't seen major disturbance for a long time.

What wildlife lives in the area?

The reserve and its surroundings provide habitat for larger forest mammals, including red deer and wild boar. Birdwatchers can look out for black storks, grey wagtails, wood pigeons and white-throated dippers — species tied both to the mature forest and to the clean, fast-flowing Kamenička stream that runs through the valley.

How do you get there?

To limit pressure on the sensitive forest stand, Buky nad Kameničkou can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. The nearest point accessible by car is near the former Third Mill (Třetí mlýn) in Bezruč's Valley (Bezručovo údolí), close to Chomutov. From there, hiking and cycling trails lead further up the Kamenička valley into the reserve itself.

What should you know before visiting?

The route through the reserve is often combined with a visit to a nearby historic water dam, making it a popular option for a full day out in the Ore Mountains. Because the area is under nature protection, visitors should stick to marked paths, avoid trampling the undergrowth and keep noise down so as not to disturb the wildlife.
