Budíškovice château

Budíškovice Château is a Baroque residence standing in the small village of Budíškovice in the Jindřichův Hradec district of South Bohemia, Czech Republic. The building rose on the foundations of an earlier Renaissance manor and still carries visible traces of several building periods.

When was Budíškovice first mentioned?

The village of Budíškovice appears in records as early as 1353, when a certain Ctibor of Budíškovice was named in a purchase contract. Ownership of the estate changed hands over the following two centuries until, in the 16th century, it passed to the Zahrádecký family of Zahrádek. It was Václav of Zahrádek who, after 1570, had a Renaissance stronghold built in Budíškovice, turning it into the new administrative center of the estate.

How did the château get its Baroque form?

The present shape of the building comes from a reconstruction carried out in 1681. It was commissioned by Baron Maxmilián Leopold Catelmo, who transformed the older Renaissance fortress into a Baroque residence. During the 18th century a château park and a game preserve were established nearby, giving the whole estate the character of a representative country seat.

Who owned the estate afterward?

In 1760 Budíškovice passed to the Wallis family, who remained its owners until 1945. Under this family the estate kept the same ownership for close to two centuries, the longest single period of continuous ownership in its history.
