Brazilka

Horní Světlá, Czechia

About this place

Brazilka is a peat bog wetland meadow in the Lusatian Mountains (Lužické hory), in the northern part of the Česká Lípa district in the Czech Republic. It lies roughly 1.5 km north of the village of Dolní Světlá pod Luží, at the eastern foothills of Mount Luž, close to the border crossing toward the German town of Waltersdorf in Saxony.

Why is it called Brazilka?

Despite the tempting association, the name has nothing to do with the South American country. It comes from a now-demolished hotel called Neubrasilien that once stood at the foot of Mount Luž. After 1945 the building was converted into a children's recovery facility, and its name gradually became attached to the surrounding wetland meadow itself.

What is the conservation history of the site?

For decades the area was used for agriculture, and in 1986 the submontane peat meadow was drained, which severely disrupted its natural hydrology. Restoration efforts followed later. Brazilka has been protected as a natural monument since 2002, and in 2011 a nature reserve carrying the same name was declared on the neighboring Mount Luž. This gives the location a layered protection status — the wetland itself and the adjacent mountain massif are both safeguarded.

What can visitors see there?

The main attraction is an educational trail dedicated to wetland restoration, called "Obnova mokřadů na Brazilce" (Restoration of Wetlands at Brazilka). The path leads through the reconstructed peat bog and marshy meadow, showing visitors how the land was returned to its natural state after years of drainage. Information panels along the route explain the work done to restore natural groundwater levels and the ecological benefits that followed.

What flora and fauna live in Brazilka?

The restored peatland has become a habitat for rare plant species typical of this kind of environment, including sundew — a carnivorous plant adapted to acidic, waterlogged ground. The area also attracts diverse wildlife, including wetland-associated bird species and reptiles that have found suitable conditions here since the meadow's natural character was restored.

Who is this place for?

Brazilka is best suited for visitors interested in nature, botany, and wetland restoration processes rather than travelers looking for a classic tourist attraction with developed infrastructure. The short educational trail makes it easy to combine with a walk toward Mount Luž or a broader trip through nearby villages in the Lusatian Mountains, such as Dolní and Horní Světlá.
