Branské doubí

Trzeboń, Czechia

About this place

Branské doubí is a protected nature monument covering 41.03 hectares, located about 3 km south of Třeboň, along the road leading to the village of Branná, in the Jindřichův Hradec district of the Czech Republic. The site lies within the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and is managed by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic (AOPK ČR) through the Třeboňsko administration.

What is Branské doubí?

It is a fragment of historic cultural landscape shaped by scattered, park-like tree stands dominated by pedunculate oak. It represents the largest cluster of old oaks anywhere in the Třeboňsko region. The trees here reach exceptional size and age, forming a habitat type that has become increasingly rare in intensively managed Central European forests: open, park-like old-growth oak stands.

Why is the site protected?

The ancient oaks provide living space for numerous, often endangered beetle species associated with decaying wood and tree hollows — some of them protected under the European Natura 2000 network (Třeboňsko site). The stand also serves as breeding habitat for bird species protected within the Třeboňsko bird area. Species recorded nesting at Branské doubí include a substantial population of nuthatch, together with middle-spotted woodpecker, grey-headed woodpecker, and tawny owl. The open, park-like forest structure also benefits pollinating insects and birds dependent on old, hollow-bearing trees.

What does the landscape look like?

The typical view at Branské doubí is one of scattered single trees and small oak groups standing among meadows and thinned undergrowth, recalling a former, extensively used wood-pasture landscape. Unlike a dense, commercially managed forest, this open spacing allows individual oaks to develop wide, spreading crowns and considerable trunk girth, which further increases the site's natural value.

How can you visit Branské doubí?

A green-marked hiking trail runs through the nature monument, making it possible to explore the site on foot as part of a longer walk around Třeboň and the nearby village of Branná. It is a good option for visitors interested in nature, veteran trees, and birdlife who are looking for a quieter alternative to the more crowded trails around the Třeboňsko fishponds.
