Bouřidla

Čmelíny, Czechia

About this place

Bouřidla is a protected natural monument straddling the administrative territories of the villages of Čížkov and Čmelíny, in the Plzeň-jih (Plzeň-South) district of the Czech Republic. The protected area covers the summit and slopes of a short ridge rising just north of Čmelíny, part of the wider Plánická Upland. Its coordinates are approximately 49.4949 N, 13.6569 E.

What makes Bouřidla worth protecting?

The site was designated for the sake of an unusually rich population of common juniper (Juniperus communis), which thrives here on a bedrock of amphibolite-biotite granite. Estimates put the number of juniper specimens on the protected ridge at around a thousand, spanning a wide range of ages and sizes — from young saplings to old, sprawling shrubs. Such a dense concentration of juniper in one place is uncommon in the Czech landscape, and it is the defining natural feature of the reserve.

Since when has the site been protected?

Bouřidla has held the status of a natural monument (přírodní památka) since 1990. Since then, the juniper stand near Čmelíny has been under continuous legal protection, with its condition monitored by the relevant nature conservation authorities.

How is the area managed?

Human intervention at Bouřidla is kept to the minimum necessary. Management is limited to thinning out more aggressive woody species that would otherwise, through natural succession, shade out and eventually displace the light-loving junipers. Without this periodic clearing, faster-growing broadleaf and coniferous trees would gradually crowd out the juniper population, so controlled removal of competing vegetation is essential to preserving this distinctive habitat.

What is the surrounding landscape like?

The Bouřidla natural monument lies within the Pod Štědrým nature park, which encompasses a broader area of ecologically valuable land in this part of the Czech Republic. The ridge itself forms part of the Plánická Upland, a hilly region with varied terrain typical of the country's southwest.

Who administers the site?

The reserve falls under the responsibility of the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic (AOPK ČR), specifically its regional branch in Plzeň. It is listed in the national register of protected areas under registration number 1348.

Frequently asked questions

What is there to see at Bouřidla? The main draw is the dense stand of common juniper growing across the rocky, granite-based ridge — a concentration rarely seen elsewhere in the Czech Republic.

Is the site easy to reach? Bouřidla sits right next to the village of Čmelíny on a modest rise, making it an accessible target for a short walk for anyone exploring the Plánická Upland.

Why is juniper so abundant here? The rocky, nutrient-poor amphibolite-biotite granite bedrock combined with the ridge's exposure to sunlight create conditions that favor juniper, a species well adapted to dry, poor soils where other trees grow more slowly.

Is it part of a larger protected area? Yes, Bouřidla is included within the Pod Štědrým nature park, which covers the surrounding countryside of similar ecological character.
