Blansko Castle

Blansko Castle is a medieval castle ruin sitting on a 545-metre hill above the village of Mírkov, northeast of Ústí nad Labem, in the České Středohoří (Central Bohemian Uplands) landscape of northern Bohemia. It is a small, rarely visited site — not to be confused with the much larger and better-known town of Blansko in Moravia, which shares only the name.

Where is Blansko Castle located?

The ruin stands on a rocky hilltop within the cadastral territory of Mírkov, above the valley of the Ryjický stream and not far from the Elbe (Labe) river. Administratively the site belongs to the Ústí nad Labem region (Ústecký kraj), and the surrounding terrain — forested hills and steep slopes above the river — is characteristic of the Central Bohemian Uplands. What is the history behind the castle?

Blansko's history was turbulent: the castle was besieged repeatedly and changed owners frequently, a common fate for smaller strongholds guarding river valleys and trade routes. After 1585 its fortifications were reworked in Renaissance style, updating the defenses to contemporary standards. By the early 17th century the castle was being used as a prison, and it was no longer permanently inhabited afterward. It was ultimately abandoned during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) and has stood as a ruin ever since.
