About this place
Biblioteca Municipal Braamcamp Freire is the municipal library of Santarém, in Portugal's Ribatejo region. It occupies the former palace of the Braamcamp Freire family on Rua Braancamp Freire and is counted among the largest municipal libraries in the country, with a collection of more than 70,000 works. For visitors it combines books, family history and the architecture of a historic residence.
What is this place?
The library is housed in a small palace typical of the Ribatejo style, rebuilt in the mid-19th century. Over the years the property was restored and remodelled to suit new social and cultural needs. The same building is home to the Casa-Museu Anselmo Braamcamp Freire, a house-museum devoted to its former owner. Within the city administration, the library belongs to the service covering libraries, the archive and cultural heritage of Santarém.
Who was Braamcamp Freire, and why the name?
Anselmo Braamcamp Freire died in 1921. His will gave the city an important legacy: the family palace, books, manuscripts and works of art. That bequest made it possible to install the municipal library in the building, and its collections were moved there between January and 14 April 1926. In April 2026 the institution marked one hundred years of service to culture and the local community.
