About this place
The Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows stands on the main square of Bohosudov, a district of the town of Krupka in the Ústí nad Labem Region, and ranks among the most important pilgrimage churches in northern Bohemia. The church is flanked by a former Jesuit residence and a set of cloisters (an ambit), forming a compact sacred complex that is visible from a distance.
How did this shrine come to be?
Devotion at this site goes back to 1426, when a small wooden chapel was first built here. It was enlarged in 1507, but over the following decades it fell into neglect and stood abandoned before 1620. The chapel was rebuilt between 1621 and 1624, and at that point it was raised to the status of a church. Over time the building was further elevated to the rank of a minor basilica, reflecting its standing within the region's church hierarchy.
Why did Bohosudov become a pilgrimage destination?
The site's popularity was tied directly to the venerated statue kept inside. Around the turn of the 20th century, the basilica was one of the most visited shrines in the Litoměřice diocese — in 1911 it ranked second in the diocese and fifth in the whole of Bohemia by visitor numbers. Even earlier, before the basilica at Filipov was built in 1885, Bohosudov held the title of the most-visited Marian shrine in all of northern Bohemia. Those figures show how significant this church once was, both religiously and socially, for the wider region.
What does the venerated statue of Our Lady of Sorrows show?
At the heart of the cult is a sculpture depicting a seated Virgin Mary holding the body of the dead Christ on her lap — a Pietà scene, showing her gazing at her son in sorrow. The sculpture itself has no particular artistic distinction; it was devotion, not craftsmanship, that drew thousands of pilgrims here over the centuries. Centuries of handling and veneration left the statue considerably damaged, which is why in 1709 it was fitted with a protective gilded metal covering that still shields it today.
What else is worth seeing on site?
Beyond the church interior and the venerated statue itself, the layout of the whole complex is notable: the church, its adjoining cloisters, and the building of the former Jesuit residence that once administered the shrine. A church surrounded by cloisters was a common arrangement for large Baroque pilgrimage centers in Central Europe, and it once made it easier to manage the thousands of pilgrims who arrived on feast days.
