About this place
Bažantník is a nature reserve located in the municipality of Karlovice, southwest of the former spa town of Sedmihorky, in the Semily district of northern Czechia. Covering 14 hectares, it was designated a protected area in 1998 within the Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise) Protected Landscape Area.
What does the reserve protect?
The main purpose of the reserve is to safeguard a fragment of lime-oak forest together with the adjoining alder woodland and wetlands along the shore of the Bažantník pond, which gave the whole area its name. The oak forest stands out for containing some of the largest and oldest English oak specimens found anywhere in Český ráj — trees whose age and size are rarely matched within such a small protected area. The reserve also includes wet meadows, home to the May lily-of-the-valley orchid (prstnatec májový), a species sensitive to changes in water conditions.
Why is Bažantník ecologically valuable?
Zoologically, Bažantník is considered one of the most valuable territories in the whole of Český ráj. This is due to the near-natural character of its deciduous forest and its direct connection to surrounding meadows and reed beds, which together create favorable transitional zones between habitats and support high species diversity. Nesting, or probable nesting, of around 40 bird species has been documented within the reserve, including the middle spotted woodpecker and the spotted flycatcher — both associated with old, well-preserved broadleaf forests. Wetland and pond areas support the agile frog, while among insects the European stag beetle stands out, a species tied to mature oak trees whose presence signals high-quality forest habitat.
Who manages the reserve?
The area is administered by the Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection of the Czech Republic, Liberec regional office. This institution is responsible for maintaining the protective regime, monitoring species populations, and carrying out management measures aimed at preserving the balance between forest, pond, and wetland habitats.
