About this place
Bažantnice u Loukova is a nature reserve on the banks of the Jizera River, between the village of Loukov and the settlement of Svijany, in the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) region. The area was granted protected status in 2000 and covers 7.17 hectares, with an additional 2.04-hectare buffer zone.
What is being protected here?
The reserve consists of a stretch of mixed deciduous forest growing on the right bank of the Jizera. Protection was established chiefly because of the forest's diverse plant and animal communities, along with several springs and a small forest pond that plays an important role in the local ecosystem. The reserve's signature tree is the pedunculate oak, with many specimens aged between 80 and 200 years. These oaks grow on clay soils that were originally largely waterlogged, a condition that favored the development of distinctive, moisture-loving plant communities.
Stands of oak this old are uncommon, and old-growth forest of this kind serves as habitat for numerous insects, birds, and fungi associated with decaying wood, making the reserve valuable for regional biodiversity.
Visiting the reserve
A 930-meter nature trail runs through Bažantnice u Loukova. Information panels along the route introduce visitors to the local flora and fauna, turning a walk through the reserve into a short lesson in natural history. The trail also includes a gazebo and benches, inviting visitors to rest in the shade of the old trees. The short distance makes it a good option for a relaxed walk that doesn't require any particular level of fitness.
A hunting lodge next to the forest
Adjoining the forest stands a historic building — the Bažantnice hunting lodge, listed as a cultural monument, along with its surrounding orchards. The current structure occupies the site of an earlier Renaissance timber building commissioned in 1578 by Jaroslav of Vartenberk for hunting purposes. The name of the area — "bažantnice," meaning pheasantry — reflects this earlier function: the grounds were once used for breeding pheasants and organizing hunts for the local nobility.
The combination of historic hunting architecture and the surviving old-growth oak stands makes Bažantnice u Loukova a place where visitors can explore regional history while observing the natural processes at work in a diverse, moist deciduous forest.
