About this place

Bašta – A Natural Monument Preserving a Former Coal Mine near Stupno

Bašta is a small but distinctive natural monument located in the municipality of Břasy, in the Rokycany district of western Bohemia, Czech Republic – straddling the cadastral areas of Kříše and Stupno, roughly 10 kilometers north of Rokycany. Unlike most protected natural areas, Bašta was not created to preserve a forest, meadow, or wetland, but to safeguard the visible legacy of industrial coal mining that once shaped this corner of the region.

What exactly is protected here?

The monument protects an exposed cross-section of a black coal seam belonging to the Břasy coal basin, together with its overlying rock layers (overburden). The seam itself is about 4.5 meters thick, offering a rare above-ground opportunity to study the geological structure of a coal deposit without descending underground. Bašta sits on the edge of the former Kliment open-pit mine, where black coal was once extracted through surface mining.

The nature reserve was officially declared in 1972, after mining operations in the area had already ceased. Conservation authorities recognized that the exposed geological profile held enough scientific and educational value to be preserved permanently rather than left to erode or be built over.

What can visitors actually see?

A staircase leads visitors down directly to the wall of the coal profile, allowing an up-close look at the rock layers and the coal seam itself. Because the exposed surface had been subjected for years to the effects of moisture, air, and shifting weather conditions, the entire coal outcrop has been treated and protected with synthetic resin – a conservation measure designed to slow further degradation and keep the profile viewable in as close to its original state as possible.

The site also preserves an old mining cart that was once used to haul extracted coal. This open-air relic serves as a tangible reminder of the industrial activity that defined the area for decades before it became a protected monument.

Why is Bašta worth a visit?

Bašta appeals to visitors interested in geology, mining history, and lesser-known destinations away from crowded tourist trails. It stands out as an unusual type of natural monument – one that protects not a living ecosystem, but a trace of human industry that, over time, gained recognized scientific value. For residents of the Rokycany region and travelers exploring western Bohemia, it offers a compact stop that combines natural science with local industrial heritage.
