About this place
Balzerova kaple (Balzer's Chapel) is a small stone chapel in the lower part of Mikulášovice, a town in northern Bohemia close to the German border. It sits on a low rise near the railway line connecting Rumburk, Panský and Mikulášovice, well off the usual tourist circuit — which makes it a rewarding stop for anyone exploring the area beyond the obvious landmarks.
Where does the chapel's name come from?
Despite the name, the chapel isn't dedicated to a saint called Balzer. It was commissioned in 1724 by Johann Ließner, a local farmhand and foreman who belonged to the area's religious Brotherhood of the Sorrowful Mother of God, recognizable by its black scapular. The plot he built on, however, belonged to his brother Balzer (Balthasar) — and it's his name that stuck as the chapel's popular label, even though it's formally consecrated to the Sorrowful Mother of God.
What survives from the original 1724 structure?
Very little of the original building remains intact today — only fragments of the perimeter wall date back to the 1724 construction. Everything else has been altered or rebuilt over the following centuries. The chapel originally had a small window on its eastern side, which no longer exists.
What does the chapel look like architecturally?
It's a small niche-type chapel on a roughly square plan, with no windows in its current form. The walls are built mostly of stone and rendered with plaster on the outside. The roof is now covered with fired clay tiles, though the original roofing was slate. The most distinctive feature of the facade is a pronounced triangular gable, giving the modest structure a clear silhouette typical of small sacred architecture in this part of Bohemia.
What happened to it in recent years?
The chapel underwent a thorough reconstruction in 2012. The restoration, based on surviving architectural details, was carried out with support from a local civic association dedicated to small monuments of northern Bohemia, the Via Foundation, and the town of Mikulášovice itself, which owns the building. It's worth noting that the chapel is not formally listed as a protected cultural monument — its significance is more local and sentimental than legal.
Is the chapel still in use today?
The chapel isn't used on a daily basis. It comes to life occasionally, most notably during the novena to the Holy Spirit, when the local community gathers there to pray. Outside of these occasions, it remains a quiet, modest feature of the townscape — more a piece of local memory than an active place of worship.
Frequently asked questions
Is Balzerova kaple a protected historic monument? No. Despite being nearly three centuries old, it has no official heritage protection status. It belongs to the town of Mikulášovice, which maintains it.
Who is the chapel dedicated to? Formally, to the Sorrowful Mother of God. The popular name "Balzerova" comes from Balzer (Balthasar), the brother of the man who financed its construction, on whose land it was built.
Can visitors see it? Yes — it stands in a public spot on a small rise in the lower part of Mikulášovice, so it can be viewed freely from the outside. Services inside are held only occasionally, mainly during the novena to the Holy Spirit.
How much of the original 1724 building is still there? Not much — only fragments of the perimeter wall survive from the original construction. The chapel's current appearance largely reflects the 2012 reconstruction, which was based on preserved architectural details.
