Arraiolos
About this place
Arraiolos is a small town in Portugal's Alentejo region, in the Évora District. It is the seat of the municipality of the same name and is known for two things: hand-stitched woollen carpets and a castle laid out as a circle. It makes an easy, unhurried stop for anyone exploring the Alentejo or driving from Lisbon toward Évora.
Where is Arraiolos and how big is it?
The town lies in the Central Alentejo subregion, surrounded by the wide plains of southern Portugal. In 2021 the town itself had 3,133 residents, while the whole municipality, spread over roughly 684 square kilometres, counted 6,606 people. Buildings are low and the pace is slow, so a few hours are enough to cover the centre on foot.
What makes the castle of Arraiolos unusual?
Work on the fortress began in 1306, after an agreement between King Dinis and the local authorities. Its standout feature is an almost perfectly round outline, a rarity among European castles. It sits on the hill of São Pedro, so the walls give views over the town's rooftops and the fields beyond. Inside the ring stands the Igreja do Salvador, a sixteenth-century church that replaced an earlier medieval building.
Why are Arraiolos carpets famous?
Hand-embroidered wool carpets are the town's signature product. The exact beginnings of the tradition are unknown. The earliest surviving written mention dates to 1598, although production may have started well before that. Many early designs echo Oriental and Indo-Persian motifs, probably inspired by carpets imported from Turkey and Persia during the Age of Discoveries.
The best place to learn about the craft is the Arraiolos Carpet Interpretive Centre. The renovated museum displays both historic and contemporary pieces, and visitors can sometimes watch artisans at work.
What else is there to see in the centre?
The main square holds a sixteenth-century pillory, a reminder of the town's historic rights. Nearby, a nineteenth-century stone fountain is also worth a look. A stroll between these sights combines easily with the climb up to the castle hill.
