About this place
Arquipélago – Centro de Artes Contemporâneas is a contemporary arts centre in Ribeira Grande, on the north coast of São Miguel island in the Azores. It occupies the remains of a late nineteenth-century liquor distillery, converted into a modern exhibition and cultural space. It opened in May 2015 and has since become one of the most important cultural addresses in the whole archipelago.
What is Arquipélago?
It is a transdisciplinary institution devoted to creating, producing and spreading art. Its programme covers visual and performing arts, multimedia, cinema, music, architecture, design, illustration, literature and even fashion. The centre works as a place of exchange between artists, audiences and the local community. Its mission is to awaken interest in contemporary art within an island context and to make creative processes easier to access.
The site sits at roughly 37.819° N, 25.529° W, right in the town of Ribeira Grande.
What is the history of the building?
The distillery buildings became an icon of the archipelago's industrial past. Rather than demolish them, the town chose adaptive reuse: the project took eight years from its start to the 2015 opening. The conversion was designed by Menos é Mais Arquitectos with João Mendes Ribeiro Arquitecto. The result pairs a raw industrial shell with contemporary interiors, and it regularly features in reviews of modern architecture.
What can you see and do here?
The centre hosts temporary exhibitions, screenings, concerts and performances. It also welcomes artists for residencies, so new work is created on the island, often linked to the local landscape and culture. It makes a good stop on a rainy day, when outdoor plans on São Miguel need to change.

Why visit?
Arquipélago shows that the Azores are about more than volcanic lakes and hot springs. A former industrial plant turned into a hub of contemporary culture is a good example of how a small island can build its own art scene. For anyone interested in industrial-conversion architecture or contemporary art, it is one of the most interesting stops in this part of Portugal, and it offers a glimpse of everyday town life away from the usual tourist trails.
If you are staying longer in Ribeira Grande, set aside at least an hour or two. Exhibitions change through the year, so each visit can feel different, and the building itself deserves a slow look from both outside and in.
