Archeopark Všestary

Archeopark Všestary is the only fully functioning prehistoric open-air museum in the Czech Republic, sitting right next to Chlum, a village within the Všestary municipality about 7 km northwest of Hradec Králové. The site brings together two very different chapters of history: the deep prehistory of Central Europe, and the 1866 battlefield of Hradec Králové that stretches out just beyond the park's fence.

What is there to see?

The exhibition splits into an indoor section and a much larger outdoor one. Outside, you'll find reconstructed Neolithic and Eneolithic houses, semi-subterranean dwellings from the early Iron Age, a timber rondel (a circular ceremonial structure thousands of years old), craft production areas, and a prehistoric cemetery with burial mounds. It's also worth knowing that the battlefield of Hradec Králové (also known as the Battle of Sadová or the Battle of Chlum) lies immediately next door. Fought on 3 July 1866 between the Austrian Empire and Saxony on one side and Prussia on the other, it involved roughly 436,000 soldiers, making it the largest battle ever fought on Czech soil and the second-largest of the entire 19th century, behind only Leipzig in 1813. The battlefield area, home to more than 460 monuments, cemeteries, and memorials, was declared a protected heritage zone in 1997, and a trail known as Úvoz mrtvých ("the Hollow of the Dead") leads into its heart.
