Arba

Srbská Kamenice, Czechia

About this place

Arba

Arba is a small nature reserve on the eastern edge of the village of Srbská Kamenice, in the Děčín District of the Ústí nad Labem Region in the Czech Republic. Covering just under 4 hectares, the reserve protects a wet meadow in the floodplain of the Kamenice River, at an elevation of roughly 211 metres above sea level. It was established in 1996 and falls under the administration of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park.

What does the Arba reserve protect?

The reserve safeguards original plant and animal communities tied to wetlands and groundwater springs, making it one of the more important wetland sites in the region. Moisture-loving plants dominate the wetter parts of the meadow, including bogbean, sharp-flowered rush and common reed. On slightly drier patches, visitors can find early marsh-orchid and spring snowflake. This mix of microhabitats allows a surprisingly diverse plant community to thrive within a compact area.

The animal life is equally notable. More than 15 dragonfly species have been recorded here, a sign of healthy aquatic and riparian conditions. Other protected species include the short-winged conehead, grass snake, moor frog and marsh frog. The presence of these amphibians and reptiles reflects the largely undisturbed character of the land, which has escaped the intensive agricultural use common elsewhere in the surrounding valley.

A viewpoint above the meadow

In the reserve's southeastern corner stands a rocky outcrop fitted with a designated viewpoint. From here, visitors get a sweeping view over the entire meadow and an almost bird's-eye perspective of Srbská Kamenice below. It's a favourite short stop for people exploring the area, offering a combination of green wetland scenery and a wider view across the village and surrounding hills.

How to reach the Arba reserve

A yellow-marked hiking trail runs around the reserve, connecting the village of Janská through Srbská Kamenice and continuing toward Růžovský vrch. The trail skirts the edge of the meadow rather than crossing it, which helps protect the sensitive wetland habitat while still letting hikers take in the scenery. Walking this stretch is an easy way to combine a visit to Arba with a longer hike toward Růžovský vrch, one of the well-known viewpoints of Bohemian Switzerland.

Why visit Arba?

Small as it is, the Arba reserve illustrates how valuable wetland patches can be within the forested river valleys of this region. It's a rewarding stop for anyone interested in wetland flora and dragonflies, and it also offers an unusual vantage point over Srbská Kamenice. The combination of a soft, water-fed meadow and a hard sandstone outcrop with a view is a fitting summary of the contrasts found throughout Bohemian Switzerland.
